We packed up the van and headed to Cunningham Falls State Park for the day. It was the perfect way to spend some quality time together. Our little ones aren’t really up for hiking just yet, so we decided to stick to the lake area.
Cunningham Falls State Park is located in the beautiful Catoctin Mountains. We visited the William Houck Area located three miles west of Thurmont. We parked on the side with the smaller beach. Across the lake, there was a large beach with paddle boats for rent and a big playground. Both sides offer nice bathroom facilities (potty training here folks), picnic tables and beautiful, grassy picnic areas.
We took our all-terrain wagon to haul all the gear. There is a pretty big hill down the lake area, and it would have been a total pain to try and drag everything down without the wheels. It wasn’t stroller-friendly either.
The entre fee is $5 per Maryland resident and $7 for out-of-state residents. Children in safety seats are free.
The beach area isn’t shaded, so you’ll want an umbrella. Also, there aren’t any places to buy food in the park. There are a few roadside food options just up the road.
If you want to get away for a night or longer, there are campsites and camper cabins available for rental from April through October. We’re planning to brave a camping trip very soon.
