We found the best way to see historic downtown Charleston, South Carolina. Book a carriage ride with Palmetto Carriage Works. I’ve never met a tour guide with more knowledge and a great sense of humor. And I’ve never seen horses so loved and well cared for, outside of the farm I grew up on.
We trotted past the oldest building in Charleston and the oldest active church congregation. We got the learn about the historic homes and the city history around us.
Our guide told us he’d been touring the city on a carriage for 14 years, and his knowledge and experience showed. We learned about war history, architectural history and anecdotal history. I was surprised at how the tour held my little one’s attention.
After our tour, we ate on Henry’s rooftop deck; then, we walked a few blocks to get a box of Byrd’s Famous Cookies. All around, it was a perfect way to spend a day as a family.
When we arrived, we were asked to wait (socially distanced) until a staff member called our names. Hand sanitizer stations were readily available. Each family was given their own row on the carriage, and everyone was required to wear a mask.
We felt safe during the entire tour, and we had a great time. I highly recommend a visit to Palmetto Carriage Works and the beautiful city of Charleston.
