When we’re not on the road discovering beautiful new places, we love to live our lives together in Lucketts, Virginia.  We get the gift of that small town feeling just outside of Washington, DC.  It really is the best of both worlds.  In less than an hour, we can hop off the metro and visit the National Mall, tons of beautiful monuments and museums, and grab a meal down by the water in Georgetown.

I’ve heard from a lot of moms that they don’t think Washington, DC is kid-friendly but it really is.  There is a ton of wide-open green space for your Littles to enjoy and some hidden gems for your family to explore.

Before you can head into the city, you’ll need to find a family-friendly home base for your traveling tribe.  Don’t waste your time bouncing between hotel and online travel agency sites.  Head over to to see all listings and get to planning your family adventure in the DC/Maryland/Virginia area.  You’ll find the best Vacation Rentals from all the top sites, all in one place.

Why not stay in DC, you ask?  Because you’d miss all the Northern Virginia fun.  We live in Northern Virginia Wine Country, and there are a ton of family-friendly wineries and breweries in the area.  Grab your picnic blanket and a few outdoor toys and you’ll be all set for an afternoon sipping wine and making memories.  Our favorite way to spend a sunny afternoon is at Fabbioli Winery here in Leesburg, VA.  If you can’t make it to this one, that’s OK.  There are over 40 wineries and breweries to choose from.

If you prefer family-friendly outdoor activities, our hometown will deliver.  Our regional park, Temple Hall Farm is a working farm that offers educational tours and up-close animal experiences.  They raise goats, sheep, pigs, Texas longhorn cows, and even peacocks.  The giant jumping pillows and playground are great for your little ones, and the covered picnic pavilion is the perfect spot for a family meal.  The park is free to the public, but be sure to check their website for hours and events before you head out.

Another free family activity is an afternoon hike up Sugarloaf Mountain.  The mountain is just over the Virginia/Maryland line, and we’ve hiked it many times with three toddlers.  There are tons of easy trails and beautiful overlook areas to snap that perfect family photo.  My kids ask to go back all the time.  I think it is their favorite adventure.

I’d love to hear about your visit to our beautiful town. And, if you have any questions, head over to our Facebook group or comment below.  I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
