We went to our first Family Theater production at the Kennedy Center, and it was so much fun for all of us.

We arrived pretty early to pick up our tickets and had to make a quick potty stop inside the REACH building. It was a fun and unexpected surprise.

This brand new performing arts complex was built for the next generation of art lovers. The goal is to partially eliminate the artist/audience divide. The slats of this piece turn to reveal another striking piece.

My curious Littles loved the whimsical and engaging art. I can’t wait to check out one of the “maker space” events.

While we waited for the show to start, we had a quick snack out on the River Terrace. It is such a beautiful space complete with fountains, gorgeous trees and stunning views in every direction.

Just before showtime, we headed into the theater after grabbing a few snacks for the show. We went to see Kid Prince & Pablo, a remake of Mark Twain’s classic tale, The Prince and the Pauper. It is set in the Digital Age and full of heart-pounding beats and awe-inspiring rhymes. The message was one of hope with a lot of “walk in your shoes” moments. The show is recommended for ages 9 & up, but my 3-year-old twins were captivated. My son almost made it through the entire show and my daughter refused to leave until the very end.

After the show, we went up to the cafe for a sandwich out on the rooftop terrace. The view of the Potomac River at sunset is worth the trip upstairs.

An afternoon at the Family Theater is fun for young and old alike. Be sure to check it out!
